The city of Pazardzhik was founded during the second half of the 15th century, on the left bank of the river Maritza, near to the place of the main market of the region. The most impressive iconostasis in Bulgaria, which was created by master artists of the Debar School and contains wood-carved scenes of the New and Old Testament, is preserved in the St. Bogoroditsa (Mother of God) church.
