With a population of about 250,000 people, Bourgas is the fourth largest town in Bulgaria and has the biggest cargo port. It occupies the innermost part of the largest bay on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast and is surrounded by three lagoon lakes (Atanasovo, Bourgas and Mandra) which are known as nature reserves for their wild fowl variety. The town is considered by many as a starting point to the resorts along the South Black Sea coast and Northwards Pomorie, Sunny Beach and Sveti Vlas. Transport connections are excellent with a direct train and a highway to Sofia. Sarafovo Airport is just outside the city. The region is famous for its seaside resorts, vast vineyards, production of white wines and a brisk commerce.
