Making the move to Bulgaria
We always firmly believed that one has got to look on the bright side of life, which is why, a few years ago now, we packed everything up and moved to Bulgaria. There had been all the fuss in the papers about Bulgarian investment properties, but we thought we’d take it that one step further and actually make the move from Edinburgh to a Black Sea property just nearby Varna.
It’s a move that my husband and I would recommend to anyone, especially if, like ourselves, you’re approaching retirement age. While, of course, we’ve been confronted with our fair share of life’s little trials, tribulations and bureaucratic hiccups, the move on the whole has been smooth and we are now fascinated by Bulgarian culture and cherish our life here.
Our only real concern is when we return to visit family in Scotland. As they are pressed for space, we usually stay in an Edinburgh hotel. This is nice enough, as the hotels in Edinburgh are of a superb standard with lovely service, but as our children are also busy working, it’s up to us to find our own hotel Edinburgh! I haven’t quite managed to master this whole booking online affair however. It’s not that I have any problems with the websites, but it just takes me almost a week to decide on our final destination! With all the cheerful colour photos that they include on the Edinburgh hotels booking sites, I just can’t make up my mind – and I’m always curious to sample a new hotel in Edinburgh every time we visit, just to see what’s on offer!
So that’s our story, and we’re pretty content, as you can see. Who could have imagined that we’d spend our retirement in Bulgaria? Not us, that’s for certain, but it’s certainly a pleasant experience and rewardingly challenging. I wouldn’t swap it for the world!
